When looking for any beauty product, be sure to avoid these major toxins that are typically used by manufacturers. There are many companies who in fact make relatively safe nail polish free of toxic chemicals that can be absorbed into the body. Basically you can get nail polishes that are: 9-free, 7-free, and 5-free. All are safe options, and 7 and 9 free are for those people who are extra careful. Go for brands that are any of the following:

5-Free Nail Polishes
Free of: Formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, and camphor.

7-Free Nail Polishes
Free of: Formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, and xylene.

9-Free Nail Polishes
Free of: Formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, xylene, ethyl tosylamide, parabens, and acetone.

Harmful Chemicals In Nail Polish
Formaldehyde is commonly known for use in preserving human and animal tissue. Moreover, it is used in plastics and building material. It is used in nail polish to strengthen, harden and preserve products. Prolonged and repeated body exposure is linked to cancers of the throat, nose and blood, asthma and nausea. Notably, the chemical is unsafe for pregnant women!

TolueneToluene is a toxic chemical substance is used to help nail polish go on smooth and is also found in nail polish removers; the smell it gives off is highly toxic. The Canadian Center for Occupational Health and Safety explains that repeated or prolonged exposure to toluene can result in decreased brain functionality, neurological damage, respiratory problems, nausea, and hearing loss.
It is also unsafe in pregnant women and their fetus.

DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate)DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate ) is used in nail polish to prevent chipping and increase the length of time it will last on your nails (so be careful when you see “long wear” polishes!). Phthalates are chemicals known to copy estrogen the body and have been shown to impair fetal development in pregnant women.

Formaldehyde ResinFormaldehyde Resin is  a by-product of formaldehyde and should be avoided.
More research needs to be done to see the full impact, but it has been linked to skin reactions, skin irritations, and discoloration and loss of nerve sensation.

Camphor Is used to give the glossy and shiny finish in nail polish.  It is considered to be less toxic than the other chemicals mention but you still need to watch out for it. In some studies it has been linked to liver failure and organ damage.

Parabens are found in so, so many makeup and cosmetic products, it is scary. Why you ask? It is used as a preservative.

TPHP (Triphenyl Phosphate) is a plasticizer used to create more flexible plastic products, like nail polish!  It is linked to hormone disruption which means it interferes with hormones in our bodies It is linked to infertility, abnormal fetal development, hormonal imbalances and several types of cancer among others.

Take Home Tips and Hints
  • Since the “chemical safe” nail polishes use safer ingredients, they may not last as long! Use a really good base and top coat to help it last longer
  • Apply many thin layers instead of one thick layer to help drying time
  • Ingredients are listed in the order of most to least in the product, so the first ingredient has the highest concentration and the last ingredient has the least concentration
  • “May contain” basically means, the product was made in a facility with other ingredients, and even though they did not at the “may contain” ingredients to their product formula, there might be contamination from when another product was made
  • Water-based polishes will last for less time when compared to other types.
